Sleep, Safety, and the Pilot’s Well‑Being

Dear Members,
Sleep is a core pillar of pilot well‑being, yet often disrupted by the demands of our profession. This issue highlights key takeaways from the PAG Wellness Session on Sleep & Mental Health held on 29 April 2026.
Dr Wong Sheau Hwa, psychiatrist and aviation medicine specialist, shared lessons from over 20 years of clinical experience. He explained what happens during each stage of sleep, clarified common misconceptions such as the limits of melatonin, and emphasized how sleep quality directly affects alertness, decision‑making, and flight safety. Pilots also learned to recognize signs of sleep disorders like sleep apnea and explored simple lifestyle habits that can improve rest.
The session ended with a preview of PAG’s upcoming wellness app, designed to support emotional check‑ins and guided relaxation — part of PAG's ongoing commitment to pilot mental health and operational readiness.
We hope this newsletter offers a clear snapshot of the session and encourages reflection on your own sleep practices. For consultations or further questions, Dr Wong can be reached at drwong@shwongsleeppsych.com.
